Padel is the fastest growing racket sport in the UK and the wider world. From a niche game played mainly in Spain and Argentina just a decade ago, padel has exploded into a mainstream sport with over 25 million active players globally and a court count that is doubling every few years.
The growth numbers behind the boom
The UK currently has just over 400 padel courts according to the Lawn Tennis Association, with that number expected to exceed 1,000 by 2028. Participation has grown by more than 200 per cent over the past three years and shows no sign of slowing.
Globally, padel is now played in over 90 countries. The professional World Padel Tour and Premier Padel circuits have brought elite competition into mainstream sports broadcasting, while celebrity adoption from football, tennis, and entertainment has accelerated mainstream awareness.
Why padel works for UK players
Padel has caught on for several reasons that align well with how British people want to participate in sport.
It is easy to learn. A complete beginner can play a competitive game within their first session. The smaller court, walls in play, and lower-compression ball reward positioning and teamwork over raw power.
It is inherently social. Always played in doubles, padel is a team game first. Communities form quickly around courts, and players bring partners, families, and friends along.
It is lower impact than tennis. The smaller court means less running, and the rallies tend to be longer and more tactical, making the sport accessible to a broader age range.
The investment opportunity
The growth has not gone unnoticed by investors and operators. UK padel venues are seeing strong utilisation rates, with prime time slots often booked out weeks in advance. Multi-court facilities in urban areas regularly hit 80 to 90 per cent peak utilisation, supporting healthy revenue figures and attractive payback periods.
The LTA has set ambitious growth targets and is actively supporting club operators with funding routes and best-practice guidance. Property developers, hotel groups, and leisure operators have all entered the market in significant numbers over the past two years.
Where the market goes next
Expect continued growth but also increasing professionalism. Quality courts, well-trained coaches, and good operational standards will become competitive differentiators. The era of being able to launch any padel court anywhere is giving way to a market where build quality, location, and operations all matter.
